Heat Wave and Health Alert System. National Update as of July 11, 2019.

Key Points

  • The first orange alert was issued on June 23, and the last one was lifted on July 2. Several departments remained under a yellow heat wave alert until July 8.

  • At the peak of the heatwave, on June 27 at 4:00 p.m., 78% of the metropolitan resident population was under an orange or even red alert. This affected all metropolitan regions, with the exception of Hauts-de-France.

  • The number of emergency care visits for the iCanicule indicator decreased across all regions and age groups in line with the drop in temperatures.

  • Over the entire period of red and orange heatwave alerts (June 23–July 2) and for the affected regions, 2,102 emergency room visits were related to hyperthermia/heatstroke, peaking at 365 visits per day—nearly half of all iCanicule-related emergency room visits. These figures are higher than those observed during the heat waves of June 2015 and 2017.

  • For the period from June 23 to July 2, eight workplace deaths potentially related to the heat were reported.
