AIDS Surveillance in France: Status as of December 31, 1994
The number of new AIDS cases diagnosed in 1994 is estimated (taking into account unreported cases and the time lag between diagnosis and reporting) at 6,600, representing a 7.8% increase compared to the number of cases diagnosed in 1993. Since the start of the epidemic, 34,287 cases of AIDS (33,724 adults and 563 children) had been recorded as of December 31, 1994. Of these cases, 59.1% are known to have died... Of the 6,600 cases estimated for 1994, 2,600 are believed to have been diagnosed in homosexual/bisexual individuals, 1,700 in drug users, and 1,200 in individuals infected through heterosexual contact... The gay/bisexual group remained the largest in 1994: it accounted for 40% of cases, drug users for 25%, and heterosexuals for 18%... With nearly 4 cumulative AIDS cases per 1,000 inhabitants, Paris and French Guiana remained the departments most affected by the epidemic. Next came the Alpes-Maritimes (2 cases per 1,000) and the departments in the inner suburbs of Paris and Guadeloupe (1.3 cases per 1,000 inhabitants).
