Causes of death among people living with HIV in 2000: the continuing impact of AIDS, and the emerging role of cancer and hepatitis
Since 1996 and the introduction of so-called highly active antiretroviral therapies, AIDS-related mortality has declined sharply. Current concerns regarding the management of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection focus particularly on treatment side effects, comorbidities—including hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection—and treatment failures. Furthermore, the causes of death among people infected with HIV have diversified, and a study based on death certificates listing HIV infection—such as the one conducted in 1992—would not identify deaths unrelated to HIV. The "Mortality 2000" survey aimed to describe the distribution of causes of death among HIV-infected adults in France in 2000 and the characteristics of those who died.
