HIV infection in Europe: a significant disparity between the West and the East
HIV/AIDS surveillance at the European level began in 1984 with the creation of the European Centre for the Epidemiological Surveillance of AIDS (EuroHIV) and the reporting of AIDS cases by 17 countries. Its goal is to understand, improve, and disseminate HIV/AIDS surveillance data in order to optimize prevention, disease control, and care. Gradually, this surveillance network expanded to all 51 countries in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) European Region. Following the reporting of AIDS cases, most European countries implemented reporting of HIV seropositivity at different times depending on the country. However, three of the hardest-hit countries in Western Europe (Spain, France, Italy) still do not have a national system for reporting HIV infection. This article presents surveillance data on AIDS cases and new HIV diagnoses, updated as of June 30, 2002. (R.A.)
