As they do every year, starting Friday, November 1, 2024, Santé publique France and the Ministry of Health and Access to Healthcare, in collaboration with the National Health Insurance, are launching the latest edition of the “Smoke-Free Month” challenge.
This campaign, now a staple event, encourages smokers to quit for 30 days and has already attracted more than 85,863 registrants and 4,757 partners. To support participants, several smoking cessation tools are available, notably on the dedicated website and via the Tabac info service app.
Once again this year, magician and host Éric Antoine is the ambassador for this challenge, through the show “La France a un incroyable talent” airing on M6.
Smoke-Free Month: A National and Collective Challenge to Protect Everyone’s Health
Since 2016, more than 1.4 million people have taken up the challenge of this local and national initiative. Data on registrations for the years 2016 through 2022 are available on Géodes.
In 2023, the OECD conducted an economic assessment of tobacco control policies in France. Their models show that, if continued annually, the initiative would reduce healthcare spending by an average of 94 million euros per year between 2023 and 2050 (at an annual cost of approximately 12 million euros).
Thus, for every euro invested in Tobacco-Free Month, more than 7 euros are saved in healthcare costs due to smoking cessation.
By 2050, “Mois sans tabac” would help prevent, in particular: 241,000 cases of lower respiratory tract infections, 44,000 cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and 28,000 cases of cancer.
Furthermore, it would boost employment and labor productivity, with an estimated value of 85 million euros per year.
“The 2024 edition of Tobacco-Free Month offers smokers a new opportunity to join a collective movement to quit smoking. This initiative, which has proven its effectiveness over the years, is based on personalized support for each participant. Numerous tools, such as the 39 89 hotline, the website, and the Tabac Info Service app, are available to help everyone find the support that suits them best. Boosting smokers’ motivation is essential, which is why Santé publique France is stepping up to support them throughout this challenge, thereby increasing their chances of quitting smoking for good. The fight against tobacco use remains a public health priority, and together we will build a smoke-free France for tomorrow.”
Dr. Caroline Semaille, Director General of Santé publique France
A month to quit smoking and make lasting changes to your life
Nearly 6 out of 10 daily smokers want to quit. “Mois sans tabac” is the perfect opportunity to take on this collective challenge with the support of various stakeholders—healthcare professionals, employers, local businesses, and loved ones—who help participants in their journey to quit smoking. In fact, going a month without smoking increases the chances of quitting for good by five times.
Once again this year, grassroots initiatives are being rolled out to reach smokers where they are. Across France, “Month Without Tobacco” booths will be set up for one day in high-traffic areas to provide useful information and support smokers in their efforts to quit.
A major media campaign to support a national initiative
Following the success in 2023, Mois sans tabac is renewing its partnership with the M6 Group and the show “La France a un incroyable talent.” Host and magician Éric Antoine encourages smokers to participate in this initiative by presenting tools to help them quit smoking. Two new TV spots are airing: one focused on the 39 89 helpline and its personalized remote support, and a second aimed at encouraging smokers’ loved ones to support them.
From October 6 through November 3, a major media campaign has been launched, including two TV spots titled “La Boum” and a tutorial on the 39 89 service, as well as several other online tutorials promoting the Mois sans tabac website, the Tabac info service app, and the smoking cessation kit.
Radio spots are also being aired throughout November to continue encouraging participants to sign up and seek help from healthcare professionals. There is also a poster campaign in over 18,000 pharmacies, shopping centers, and train stations, and, for the first time, on screens at gas stations. This initiative will be reinforced by an online presence, particularly on social media, including a collaboration with an influencer on Instagram and TikTok, @just1bisou
