Mental Health in the Grand Est Region. Bimonthly Epidemiological Update, March 14, 2022.

Key Points

  • Among adults, the number of emergency department visits for mental health issues in February 2022 was higher than in February 2021, but similar to the average monthly number observed in February over the 2018–2020 period. The share of monthly activity during the first two months of 2022 remained similar to that of 2021.

  • The number of emergency department visits for suicidal ideation during the first two months of 2022 remained high and consistent with what was observed at the end of 2021.

  • Among children, the monthly number of emergency room visits for mental health issues in February 2022 was lower than in 2021, but remained significantly higher than the monthly average observed in February over the 2018–2020 period.

  • Over the entire year of 2021, the average monthly number of emergency room visits for mental health issues among children (496) increased by 31% compared to the average monthly number observed during the 2018–2020 period (378).

  • This increase is partly explained by a rise in 2021 among 11- to 17-year-olds in the average monthly number of visits i) for suicidal acts (+34% compared to the 2018–2020 period) and ii) for suicidal ideation (+107% compared to the 2018–2020 period).

  • This increase persisted through the first two months of 2022 (+67% compared to the 2018–2020 period for suicidal acts and +223% for suicidal ideation).

  • Other mental health monitoring indicators from the Oscour® and SOS Médecins networks show no significant change since the last analysis.
