Public Health Surveillance in Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy. Epidemiological Update, March 19, 2015.

Key points

Mortality Surveillance

In the Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy regions, the excess all-cause mortality observed in recent weeks has been declining since week 2015-08.

Bronchiolitis surveillance

In the Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy regions, as in mainland France, outpatient and hospital indicators have returned to low levels, marking the end of the winter epidemic.

Surveillance of influenza-like illness

  • In mainland France, all indicators continue to decline.

  • In the Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy regions, the trend mirrors the national situation, and the number of flu-related visits to SOS Médecins and emergency departments is declining. As in previous flu seasons, influenza B viruses have become the predominant strain in both regions as the epidemic winds down.

Surveillance of severe influenza cases

In mainland France, 1,411 severe cases of influenza were reported this season, including 75 in Nord-Pas-de-Calais and 25 in Picardy, and 186 deaths (12 in Nord-Pas-de-Calais and 5 in Picardy). The majority of cases had risk factors for complicated influenza and were infected with type A influenza viruses.

Surveillance of Acute Gastroenteritis

  • In mainland France, the incidence of acute diarrhea cases seen in general practice is below the epidemic threshold.

  • In Nord-Pas-de-Calais, calls to SOS Médecins, although below the regional epidemic threshold, have remained at a high level since early January.

  • In the Picardy region, calls to SOS Médecins for gastroenteritis, although on the rise this week, remain within expected ranges; visits to emergency departments remain at a low level.
