Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of March 5, 2015.

Mortality: In week 8, the total number of deaths across all age groups declined slightly, while the proportion of deaths among older adults continued to rise. Since the beginning of the year, this increase has been observed in all regions. Nationally, winter mortality is 17% higher than the expected mortality rate calculated based on the previous eight years. In Aquitaine, this excess is estimated at approximately 20% (compared to 7% in 2013/14 or 15% in 2008/2009). The contribution of influenza to excess mortality is known to be significant among the elderly, though it is not possible to specify its exact share in the excess observed this season. These initial assessments should be interpreted with caution, as the episode is not yet over and the data are not yet consolidated due to the usual delays in reporting.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: According to available data, emergency department activity for those aged 75 and older is on the rise, above the threshold. Emergency department activity for children under 1 year of age is declining, close to expected levels for this time of year.

Reportable Diseases (MDO)No unusual situation this week.

Acute Gastroenteritis (AG)Moderate activity in Aquitaine as well as in France (below epidemic thresholds).Increased activity among those aged 75 and older as well as in the Southwest region.

Influenza and influenza-like illnessesIn Aquitaine, activity continues to decline but remains high, with 15.6% of influenza-related activity reported by SOS Médecins (compared to 19.9% in Week 8) and 1.3% by Oscour® (compared to 1.7% in Week 8), as of March 4, 2015, 90 severe cases of influenza in intensive care compared to 73 on 02/25/2015, as well as 3 new outbreaks of acute respiratory infections in nursing homes.

Bronchiolitis: Low activity below thresholds, though with a slight increase in activity in emergency departments. Stable activity in the AquiRespi network with 72 cases treated.

Respiratory virology and enterovirus meningitis: Significant circulation of seasonal respiratory viruses according to Bordeaux University Hospital, notably influenza A (40%) and influenza B (19%)

Carbon monoxide poisoning (update as of 02/26/15)Since September 2014, 43 (+8) episodes of CO poisoning affecting 141 people in Aquitaine (2 deaths). Nationally, 30 deaths have been recorded since September 2014.
