Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of September 5, 2013.

Mortality: The number of recorded deaths remains consistent with that of previous years.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: No significant changes in emergency department visits for children under 1 year of age. Activity among those over 75 years of age has increased for the second consecutive week, though figures remain below the alert threshold.

Reportable Diseases (MDO) Note the persistently high incidence of IIM in the region, particularly in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. For the month of August, 3 IIM C, 2 IIM B, and 1 IIM Y cases were reported. Enterovirus meningitis Nationally, the number of emergency department visits for viral meningitis is significantly decreasing across all age groups.

Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE) In Aquitaine, AGE activity in hospital emergency departments and primary care is slightly increasing but remains close to the expected level for this time of year. Nationally, figures remain stable, within the range typically observed during this period.

Vector-borne diseases In Lot-et-Garonne, since the resumption of enhanced surveillance for chikungunya and dengue, two imported cases of dengue have been confirmed by the National Reference Center for Arboviruses.

Asthma and AllergiesAsthma activity remains stable in Aquitaine as well as in France. An upward trend continues to be observed in allergy monitoring at the regional level.

Heat-related illnessesThe Heat Wave and Health Alert System (SACS) was lifted on August 31. This season was marked by a heat wave between July 23 and 27 and a brief heat spike on July 31, which triggered the activation of Level 2 of the National Heat Wave Plan (PNC) for certain departments in Aquitaine. No heat wave alerts were issued this season.

Jellyfish stings (indicator not detailed in the body of the document)The 2013 PhysaTox surveillance (July 1 to September 2) was marked by the near absence of jellyfish on Aquitaine’s beaches. Only a few specimens were reported by lifeguard stations during the summer. No serious cases (with systemic symptoms) were reported.
