Limousin Public Health Bulletin No. 26 – February 2014
Highlight
Each year, the Regional Unit of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance in Limousin and Poitou-Charentes publishes surveillance data on notifiable diseases for the Limousin region. Surveillance of foodborne illnesses helps establish and evaluate measures to prevent these events, thereby contributing to food safety. This health surveillance bulletin presents regional reporting data for 2012 received by the InVS regarding foodborne illnesses and zoonoses.
In 2012, there was a significant decline in reports of foodborne illnesses, particularly in the Haute-Vienne department. The lack of data transmission to the InVS prevents us from accurately calculating the proportion of foodborne illnesses for which the etiology could be confirmed. In 2012, there was also a significant decline in reports of hepatitis A throughout the region (only one case reported). Reports of listeriosis increased in 2012, particularly in the department of Corrèze. In 2012, for the first time in several years, a case of tularemia was reported in the region, as well as an outbreak involving two cases of botulism.
It is important to raise awareness among potential reporters in the Limousin region regarding the reporting and notification of notifiable diseases in order to better respond and prevent the risk of epidemics, but also to analyze the trends of these diseases over time and adapt public health policies to the needs of the population.
