2009 Pandemic Influenza A(H1N1). Initial assessment of the winter surge in Languedoc-Roussillon

In late April 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert following the identification in Mexico and the United States of cases infected with a new variant of the H1N1 influenza virus. This alert triggered the implementation of phased measures tailored to the available scientific knowledge, aimed at mitigating and assessing the effects of a pandemic. In Languedoc-Roussillon, the pandemic wave occurred in mid-fall 2009, between the last week of October (Week 44) and the last week of December (Week 53). It lasted 10 weeks, with an estimated 125,175 cases seen by primary care physicians (source: Sentinelles network, Inserm). The incidence rate of healthcare utilization for influenza-like illness during this pandemic wave is estimated at 4.9% of the general population. The number of patients hospitalized for influenza or influenza complications in acute care units was 526 cases admitted to the region’s major healthcare facilities (source: regional surveillance server, ARH). Surveillance of severe cases reports the admission of 39 cases to intensive care units, representing 7.4% of hospital admissions for influenza. Six deaths linked to influenza A(H1N1)2009 have been reported by these units. None of these efforts could have been carried out without the active cooperation of frontline healthcare providers (clinicians from numerous specialties, laboratory professionals, and institutions). We would like to thank them all here.
