Regional Assessment of the Pandemic’s Health Impact. Special Issue. Influenza A(H1N1) 2009 in Midi-Pyrénées
The health impact of the 2009 influenza A(H1N1) pandemic can be assessed using several indicators. The ideal indicator of influenza incidence in the community would be the number of "true" virologically confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1)2009. However, the available virological data, while essential for monitoring and interpreting the epidemic (see Article 2), lack the representativeness and precision necessary to allow for such estimates. The number of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness, when it can be reliably estimated, is, however, a relevant indicator for assessing the pandemic’s impact in terms of symptomatic cases, since the influenza A(H1N1)2009 virus was predominant among patients with “flu-like” symptoms during the pandemic wave. It should be kept in mind, however, that this indicator remains imperfect since it is based on clinical symptoms. Indicators of the severity of the epidemic were derived from monitoring the number of severe cases and influenza-related deaths (see Article 1). In this article, we present a regional overview of these two indicators.
