Public Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of March 5, 2015.
Key Points
Influenza: A marked decline in influenza activity is observed in the Languedoc-Roussillon region following an epidemic peak in week 2015-07, although influenza-related activity remains fairly high in week 9 (approximately 150 emergency room visits recorded for this reason). SOS Médecins data confirm the decline of the epidemic. In France, visits to emergency departments and SOS Médecins for flu-like symptoms are decreasing significantly. In 2015, the cumulative regional total of flu cases admitted to intensive care exceeded that observed since 2009. The median age was 65 years; the majority of these individuals had a risk factor for complicated flu, and a minority had been vaccinated.
Bronchitis / Bronchiolitis / Pneumonia: all these respiratory illnesses are showing a marked decline in week 2015-09, whether in emergency departments or at SOS Médecins clinics, both regionally and nationwide.
Gastroenteritis: Emergency room visits remain fairly high and primarily involve children under 6 years of age (who account for half of the patients). A slight increase in gastroenteritis diagnoses is noted in data from the Perpignan and Nîmes associations.
