Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of February 13, 2015.
The flu epidemic is on the rise and is dominated by the A(H3N2) virus. Nationally, the incidence rate of flu-like illness consultations, calculated using data from the Single Network, was 914 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Week 6, a sharp increase compared to the previous week (750 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).Regarding virological surveillance, among the 241 samples collected by this network in week 6, 65% tested positive for influenza. In total, since week 40, 709 influenza viruses have been identified by physicians in the Single Network among the 1,480 samples collected. 60% of these samples were type A(H3N2), 21% were type A(H1N1)pdm09, 11% were type B(Yamagata), 6% were non-ST type A, 1% were type B(Victoria), and 1% were type B with an undetermined lineage.Vaccination coverage among at-risk populations is likely insufficient, and the vaccine’s efficacy is limited. The circulating B and A(H1N1) viruses are identical to the vaccine strain, which is not the case for A(H3N2) viruses. However, the vaccine remains the best preventive tool, even if its efficacy is not optimal.Since November 1, 2014, 483 severe cases have been reported to the InVS (179 severe cases in week 6), including 42 deaths. The majority of these severe cases had a risk factor for complicated influenza, and most of them were infected with an influenza A virus. In Midi-Pyrénées, according to facilities participating in the Oscour® network, the number of emergency department visits is increasing (+22.6%) compared to the previous week. Since the start of surveillance, 39 severe cases hospitalized in intensive care have been reported to the Cire Midi-Pyrénées (18 hospitalized in week 6), including 5 deaths. Among these patients, 59% were aged 15–64, 36% were over 65, and 5% were under 1 year old. 77% of these patients had a risk factor for complicated influenza, and 82% were infected with a type A virus, which is consistent with national observations.
