Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of January 22, 2015.

Flu: Epidemic Threshold Exceeded in France According to the Single Surveillance NetworkAt the national level, according to the Single Surveillance Network, the incidence rate of influenza-like illness was 246 cases per 100,000 inhabitants [95% CI: 219 – 273], a sharp increase compared to recent weeks and above the epidemic threshold (179 per 100,000 inhabitants) for the first time this season. The start of the epidemic is to be confirmed next week. SOS Médecin calls involving a diagnosis of influenza or influenza-like illness were rising sharply among children under 15 and adults under 75. In hospitals, according to emergency departments participating in the Oscour® network, the number of emergency room visits for influenza was up compared to last week among children under 15 and stable in other age groups. In Midi-Pyrénées, indicators are also on the rise. SOS Médecin calls have risen sharply (12.1% of consultations in Week 3 compared to 7.1% the previous week). The number of visits for influenza/flu-like illness has also increased in facilities participating in the Oscour® network (+18.6%).The predominant virus circulating this year is type A. The A(H3N2) subtype is known to affect the elderly in particular, which justifies the implementation of enhanced hygiene measures, especially within facilities housing dependent elderly individuals (EHPAD): limiting contact with sick individuals and movement, hand washing/disinfection, wearing masks for close contacts and for the patient, covering the mouth when sneezing, and using disposable tissues. Furthermore, it is important to detect the first cases early and to investigate the cause.
