Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of October 17, 2013.
Highlight: Study on the determinants of carbon monoxide poisoning
The National Institute for Prevention and Health Education (Inpes) and the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) have partnered to conduct a study aimed at describing the socioeconomic factors, knowledge, and habits regarding CO among households that experienced accidental poisoning between September 1, 2013, and March 31, 2014. This study is part of the effort to combat CO poisoning, as mandated by the 2004 Public Health Act. It complements the data provided by epidemiological surveillance, which aims to identify the source of poisoning and the environmental factors causing it to prevent any risk of recurrence in households that have already experienced poisoning.According to the first surveillance bulletin from the InVS, between September 1 and October 1, 2013, 56 cases of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning had already been reported to the surveillance system, exposing 164 people to CO fumes. One person died at home following exposure to CO produced by a portable space heater.
