Tuberculosis in Mayotte: An Overview Following the Establishment of a Tuberculosis Center in 2009
Introduction. In Mayotte, the follow-up of tuberculosis patients and contact tracing were not systematically organized until 2008. In accordance with national guidelines, a tuberculosis control center (CLAT) was established in 2009. Methods. This two-year retrospective study examined two populations monitored by the CLAT: tuberculosis patients, for whom the epidemiological profile and treatment follow-up were studied; and their contacts, for whom screening, treatment, and follow-up were evaluated. Results. The incidence of tuberculosis was 16.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 2009 and 10.3 in 2010. It affects a young, vulnerable, and migrant population. The treatment success rate was 82.5% among smear-positive patients. No patients were lost to follow-up. Case investigations identified 8.3 contacts per index case. Among them, 39% had latent tuberculosis infection. Conclusion. The opening of the Clat has led to a marked improvement in the follow-up of tuberculosis patients. Case investigations do not appear to be entirely comprehensive, and there is room for improvement in this area. The CLAT must strengthen its efforts targeting the migrant population, which is particularly affected by tuberculosis. (R.A.)
