Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Update as of July 21, 2020.

Key Points

  • Since week 20, dengue surveillance indicators have been declining (number of confirmed cases, emergency room visits, and outpatient visits), reflecting a slowdown in the epidemic.

  • Viral circulation continues to affect nearly all of the island’s municipalities (22 out of 24): the western and southern parts of the island are the hardest hit, but cases remain widely scattered.

  • The proportion of hospitalized cases remains slightly higher than in 2019.

  • Severe, delayed ophthalmological manifestations are being reported long after the onset of dengue symptoms (see CAT p.2)

  • The DENV1 serotype remains the overwhelming majority. DENV2 is now detected sporadically and ubiquitously, while DENV3 is still detected in the east, north, and west (see focus)

  • In 2020, 19 deaths were classified as dengue-related
