Outbreak of multidrug-resistant bacteria (OXA-48 and KPC) at Bastia Hospital from 2012 to 2013, Corsica, France
Introduction: From June 2012 to July 2013, the Bastia Hospital Center (CHB) faced two concurrent outbreaks of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) of the OXA-48 and KPC types within its facility. Support from Cire Paca/Corse was requested to conduct epidemiological surveillance. Method: From the start of the outbreak, case surveillance, organized by Arlin Corse, was implemented. Despite the measures implemented and in light of the emergence of new cases, a timeline for each of the two types of multidrug resistance was developed to provide a concise and up-to-date overview of events and to monitor the impact of control measures. Results: A total of 30 individuals were identified as carriers of a multidrug-resistant bacterium: 18 patients were found to be carriers of Klebsiella (K.) pneumoniae with OXA-48-type multidrug resistance, and 12 patients with K. pneumoniae of the KPC type. Of these 30 cases, 27 patients were diagnosed during their hospitalization by the hospital laboratory, and 3 patients were detected in a clinical laboratory in the Bastia region, having been previously hospitalized at the CHB. Discussion: The isolation of cases and contacts by dedicated teams (cohorting) brought the 14-month-long outbreak under control. Support and guidance for the CHB from the ARS, Arlin, Cclin Sud-Est, Cire Paca/Corse, and the NOA unit of the InVS were essential for the successful implementation of cohorting. (R.A.)
