Key Points

The winter of 2022–2023 saw severe outbreaks of influenza and bronchiolitis occurring concurrently with active circulation of SARS-CoV-2. This situation significantly disrupted hospital operations.

Influenza

• An early (beginning in late November) and prolonged (17 weeks) outbreak;

• Two successive waves of the outbreak, linked to the successive circulation of the A(H3N2) and then B/Victoria viruses;

• Very high intensity in hospitals at the time of the first epidemic peak;

• 12,599 emergency room visits, 2,690 hospitalizations, and 20,758 SOS Médecins consultations;

• Insufficient vaccination coverage, estimated at 48% among at-risk individuals targeted for vaccination.

Bronchiolitis

• An early epidemic (beginning in mid-October), long-lasting (14 weeks), and very intense;

• A hospitalization rate comparable to previous years, indicating a lack of particular severity;

• 7,351 emergency room visits, 2,811 hospitalizations, and 578 SOS Médecins consultations among children under 2 years of age.
