SOS Médecins National Newsletter, January 5, 2010

Data from the SOS Médecins Val d'Oise association are now included in the reports. The SOS Médecins Martinique association has joined the surveillance system and has been submitting its data since November 13, 2009. This association will be included in the report after three months of data submission.Over the past week, the total volume of activity for the SOS Médecins associations increased slightly compared to the previous week. Activity was very high during the Christmas and New Year’s weekends in the North, Northeast, and West regions. In all regions, the number of cases increased among people over 15 years of age and decreased among children aged 2 to 14.

Nationally, the reasons for calls suggesting flu-like symptoms have been declining for several weeks across all geographic regions. Over the past week, diagnoses of "clinical influenza" have also decreased. This decline affects all age groups. Among those over 75, the number of calls for fever has continued to rise over the past two weeks across all of France.

The proportion of cases for the “gastroenteritis” indicator has risen sharply compared to last week in most geographic areas. The proportion of cases for the “bronchiolitis/respiratory conditions in infants” indicator has decreased slightly compared to last week. The number of deaths certified by SOS Médecins has been rising over the past two weeks in parallel with overall activity. Thus, the proportion of deaths among total cases remains stable at less than 1%. For the past week, an increase in total activity was observed in most regions due to the school vacation period, along with a decrease in "clinical influenza" diagnoses.
