This fact sheet was written by Béatrice Lamboy based on the Santé publique France CPS Reference Guide, Volume 1. It focuses on the first general psychosocial competency (CPS) and provides a summary of a specific psychosocial competency: Communicating Empathetically (S1.2). Communicating with empathy refers to the ability to perceive and understand another person’s experience (their emotions, perspective, needs, etc.) and to articulate it appropriately. Communicating empathetically requires developing three main areas of psychological knowledge and skills: Knowledge 1: Understanding the characteristics of empathetic communication; Skill 2: Listening empathetically (empathic understanding and silent listening); Skill 3: Speaking empathetically (empathic rephrasing and active listening). This specific skill can be applied during CPS activities. Thus, following a theoretical section, practical examples are presented for adults, youth, and children.
