Use of other drugs.

During adolescence, the use of tobacco, alcohol, and paka plays a significant role in drug use, but Polynesian adolescents sometimes experiment with other substances as well. These may include illicit drugs or products used for purposes other than their intended ones, such as inhalants like glue or solvents. Consumption levels of these other drugs are very low, which justifies focusing solely on experimentation, as other practices—such as regular use—are extremely rare, particularly among the youngest adolescents. On the other hand, it is particularly interesting to study the perceived accessibility of these various drugs, especially in comparison to what is observed in metropolitan France.[chapter excerpt]
