Ciguatera food poisoning: how to recognize it even if the patient hasn’t traveled

On August 29, 2001, the Department of Infectious Diseases at the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) was notified by a physician at a Parisian hospital of an outbreak of ciguatera food poisoning. This outbreak, involving two young adults, occurred following the consumption of fish (sushi) at a Japanese restaurant on May 19, 2001. Following this report, the Paris veterinary services initiated an investigation, currently underway, to determine the species of fish involved and its origin in order to implement appropriate control measures and prevent further outbreaks.
