Suicidal Thoughts and Reported Suicide Attempts (Public Health France Barometer 2024 – Ages 18–79)

  • In 2024 in Île-de-France, the prevalence of suicidal thoughts in the past 12 months among 18- to 79-year-olds was estimated at 5.0%. It was 4.6% for reported suicide attempts over a lifetime and 0.3% for reported suicide attempts in the past 12 months.

Emergency department visits for self-harm (OSCOUR® 2024 – all ages)

  • In 2024, 9,863 emergency department visits for self-harm were recorded, representing 2.6‰ of all visits, stable compared to 2023 (+2%).

  • Women accounted for 68% of emergency department visits for self-harm. Young women aged 11–24 continued to represent the majority of women treated in the emergency department for self-harm.

  • Emergency department activity for self-harm increased between 2023 and 2024 among youth aged 11–17 of all genders.

Hospitalizations for self-harm (SNDS PMSI-MCO 2024 – all ages)

  • In 2024, 10,269 hospitalizations for self-harm were recorded, representing a standardized rate of 80 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants, an increase compared to 2023 (+11%).

  • Young women aged 11–24 continued to have the highest hospitalization rate for self-harm in 2024, particularly among adolescent girls aged 11–17, with 477 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants.

  • Among girls aged 11–17, hospitalizations increased between 2023 and 2024. An increase was observed across all age groups among men, except for those aged 65 and older.

  • Drug overdose was at least one of the methods used in 71.6% of hospital stays and was the most common method regardless of gender.

Deaths by Suicide (SNDS CépiDc 2023 – all ages)

  • In 2023, 928 deaths by suicide were recorded, corresponding to a standardized rate of 8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, stable compared to 2022 (-1%).

  • Men aged 45 and older continued to have the highest suicide death rates in 2023, with a death rate of 16 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants among those aged 45–64 and 22 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants among those aged 65 and older.

  • The most frequently recorded method of suicide on death certificates was hanging (42.8%), regardless of gender.
