COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Nouvelle-Aquitaine as of April 29, 2020

Key indicators

Estimated number of confirmed COVID-19 cases*

  • From January 21 to April 28, 2020, 4,582 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (+332 cases since April 21; 126,835 cases in France)

Surveillance of hospital and private laboratories

  • The proportion of positive tests for SARS-CoV-2 is declining in both hospital and private laboratories

  • The departments of Vienne, Haute-Vienne, Corrèze, Creuse, and Gironde have the highest incidence rates

Community-based surveillance

  • SOS Médecins: Decline in COVID-19 activity, with 307 cases for suspected COVID-19 in S17-2020, representing 6% of total activity (448 cases, or 7%, in S16)

  • Private laboratories (3 labs): 1% of tests positive in Week 17 of 2020 (3% in Week 16 of 2020), compared to 7% in France

Surveillance in long-term care facilities, including nursing homes

  • 1,783 cases among residents, including 179 deaths reported as of April 27, 2020 (1,523 cases, including 151 deaths, as of April 21, 2020)

Surveillance in hospitals

  • Oscour® Network

    • Decrease in emergency department activity for COVID-19 in S17-2020, 663 visits for suspected COVID-19, representing 4% of total hospital emergency department activity (863 visits, or 6%, in S16-2020)

    • The hospitalization rate following visits for suspected COVID-19—an indicator of severity upon arrival at the emergency department—remains high in Week 17 of 2020 (56% compared to 51% in Week 16), particularly among those aged 65 and older (80% in Week 17 of 2020)

  • Hospital laboratories at the Bordeaux, Limoges, and Poitiers university hospitals: 4% of tests were positive in Week 17 of 2020 (7% in Week 16 of 2020)

  • Sentinel intensive care units: among the 252 severe cases recorded by this network, the majority are men (73%), aged 65 and older (50%), and have at least one risk factor (77%); note that more than one-third of the cases in this network come from another region (n=87)

Mortality surveillance

  • As of April 28, 2020, 302 deaths with COVID-19 listed as a cause were reported by hospitals in Nouvelle-Aquitaine; the regional trend in hospital deaths is the lowest in the country

  • Among the 356 deaths with COVID-19 listed in electronic death certificates, 62% had known comorbidities and 77% were aged 75 or older

  • No excess mortality from all causes was detected through week S16-2020 (April 13–19, 2020) at the departmental and regional levels in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
