COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Nouvelle-Aquitaine as of May 7, 2020

Estimated number of confirmed COVID-19 cases*

  • From January 21 to May 5, 2020, 4,707 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (+154 cases since April 27; 132,967 cases in France)

Surveillance of hospital and private laboratories

  • The proportion of positive tests for SARS-CoV-2 is declining in both hospital and private laboratories

  • The departments of Vienne, Haute-Vienne, Corrèze, Creuse, and Gironde have the highest incidence rates

Community-based surveillance

  • SOS Médecins: Decline in COVID-19 activity, with 258 cases of suspected COVID-19 in S18-2020, representing 4% of total activity (307 cases, or 6%, in S17)

  • Private laboratories (3 labs): 1% of tests were positive in Week 18 of 2020 (2% in Week 17 of 2020), compared to 4% in France

Surveillance in long-term care facilities, including nursing homes

  • 1,707 cases among residents as of May 5, 2020, including 762 confirmed cases (1,783 cases, including 726 confirmed, as of April 27, 2020)

  • 198 deaths as of May 5, 2020 (179 deaths as of April 27, 2020)

Surveillance in hospitals

  • Oscour® Network

    • Decrease in emergency department activity for COVID-19 in S18-2020, 428 visits for suspected COVID-19, representing 3% of total hospital emergency department activity (4% in S17-2020)

    • The hospitalization rate following visits for suspected COVID-19, an indicator of severity upon arrival at the emergency department, remains high in Week 18 of 2020 (49% compared to 56% in Week 17), particularly among those aged 65 and older (78% in Week 18 of 2020)

  • Hospital laboratories at the Bordeaux, Limoges, and Poitiers university hospitals: 2% of tests were positive in W18-2020 (4% in W17-2020)

  • Sentinel intensive care units: among the 260 severe cases recorded by this network, the majority are men (73%), aged 65 and older (51%), and have at least one risk factor (78%); note that more than one-third of the cases in this network come from another region (n=89)

Mortality surveillance

  • As of May 5, 2020, 336 deaths with COVID-19 listed as a cause were reported by hospitals in Nouvelle-Aquitaine;

  • Among the 389 deaths with COVID-19 mentioned in electronic death certificates, 62% had known comorbidities and 76% were aged 75 or older

  • No excess all-cause mortality was detected through week S17-2020 (April 20–26, 2020) at the departmental and Nouvelle-Aquitaine regional levels
