Antiretroviral prophylaxis following sexual assault: experience from a forensic medical consultation unit.

In France, guidelines for prescribing post-exposure prophylaxis with antiretroviral therapy following sexual exposure have been in place since 1998 [1]. In cases of rape, assessing the risk of HIV transmission is difficult because, in most cases, the perpetrator is not identified and his HIV status is unknown at the time the victim is treated. Assessing risk factors for HIV exposure is complicated by the traumatic and emotional context of the examination. However, sexual violence frequently causes mucosal injuries that increase the risk of HIV transmission. Thus, prescribing prophylactic treatment is most often indicated in cases of rape. The aim of this study is to present the experience of the Forensic Medical Consultation Unit (UCMJ) at the Créteil Intercommunal Hospital Center (CHI). (R.A.)
