COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for December 8, 2022
Key Points
In week 48, SARS-CoV-2 circulation continued to increase nationwide. Virological indicators (calculated based on antigen tests alone and all tests) were on the rise, as were healthcare utilization indicators. Hospital indicators were also on the rise.
Mainland France:
Incidence rates continue to rise across all regions
Increase in new hospitalizations in most regions
Number of deaths on the rise
Overseas territories:
Rise in incidence rates and rates of new hospitalizations in Guadeloupe
Variants
Omicron sublineages: BA.5 ubiquitous, accounting for 95% of sequences in the Flash S47 survey (11/21)
Among the BA.5 sublineages, BQ.1.1 continued to rise (58% in Flash S47 vs. 54% in Flash S46)
Prevention
Vaccination as of December 5, 2022 (Covid Vaccine data):
8.8% of those aged 60–79 had received a booster tailored to the Omicron variant (9.7% of those eligible). Additionally, 32.1% of them are considered protected by vaccination;
11.2% of those aged 80 and older had received a booster tailored to the Omicron variant (12.8% of those eligible) and 14.4% are considered protected by vaccination.
Given the active circulation of SARS-CoV-2 and seasonal viruses, it is necessary to strengthen adherence to the following combined measures:
up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination, particularly through a booster dose with a bivalent vaccine (against the original strain and the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2) for those eligible who have received their primary series, as well as against influenza viruses;
isolation in the event of a positive COVID-19 test and/or symptoms;
continued adherence to preventive measures: wearing a mask (in the presence of vulnerable individuals, in crowded indoor spaces such as public transportation), handwashing, and ventilating enclosed spaces.
