HIV-related activity at 24 hospital sites in mainland France in 1995–1996
The year 1996 is considered a turning point in the care of people living with HIV. The treatments available to patients changed significantly. The proportion of patients receiving treatment among the active hospital caseload increased by 15% over the course of a year, reaching 75% in the fourth quarter of 1996. Among treated patients, the proportion receiving combination therapy rose from 31% in June 1995 to 96% by the end of 1996. Since September 1996, many CISIHs (Centers for Information and Care on Human Immunodeficiency) have noted a decrease in their inpatient admissions. To assess trends in hospital care for HIV-infected patients, a study on hospital activity from 1995 to 1996 was conducted. (adapted from the text).
