COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Martinique as of January 22, 2021
Key Points
Epidemiological indicators for SARS-CoV-2 in Martinique point to stable but still active viral circulation. Vigilance must remain high in the coming weeks given the risk of new variants entering our territories. The territory remains classified as having a high vulnerability level.
Since late November (week 2020-48), the incidence rate has been below the alert threshold and the positivity rate below the vigilance threshold. In week 2021-02, testing rates decreased compared to previous weeks and returned to levels comparable to those seen in the weeks before the end-of-year holidays. The age group with the highest incidence was 20–29 years old. Among children aged 0 to 9, no new cases were reported in week 2021-02 (out of 48 tests performed), while a 20% increase was recorded among those aged 10–19 (14 cases per 100,000 population). Among those aged 65 and older, the incidence was generally stable (13 cases per 100,000 population, compared to 15 the previous week). As of January 22, the effective reproduction number (R_e) calculated from SI-DEP data over the past 7 days was not significantly below 1: 0.91 [0.71–1.14]. In summary, virological indicators point to stable but still active viral circulation. Vigilance must remain high in the coming weeks given the risk of new variants entering our region.
In hospitals, the number of new admissions for Covid-19 remained stable and low; the same trend was observed in adult and pediatric emergency departments.
In the community, the number of home visits conducted by the SOS Médecins association, as well as the estimated number of consultations for suspected COVID-19 by the island’s general practitioners, remained low compared to previous weeks.
