COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Martinique as of September 18, 2020
Key Points
Epidemiological surveillance indicators confirm active circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, particularly in community healthcare settings and among adults
(ages 40–59). Last week, Martinique recorded an incidence rate below the alert threshold of 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Vulnerability to the virus remains high. In hospitals, 17 patients were hospitalized for COVID-19 as of September 16, including 6 in the adult intensive care unit. In week 37, COVID-19 activity in the adult emergency department at Martinique University Hospital remained low, accounting for 1.1% of total activity. In primary care, the trend was upward in week 37 (September 7–13) compared to the previous two weeks, both in terms of the number of consultations for acute respiratory infections (ARI) and in terms of visits for suspected COVID-19 conducted by SOS Médecins. Last week (week 37), 3,332 people were tested for SARS-CoV-2 via RT-PCR in Martinique. Of these, 170 tested positive, a decrease compared to the previous week.
The positivity rate was 5.10% in week 37, thus exceeding the alert threshold (5%);
The incidence rate (number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants) was 47.39 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in week 37 and decreased compared to the previous week. The incidence rate is close to the alert threshold.
While the incidence rate is decreasing among young adults (ages 15–44) and older adults (ages 75 and older), an increase is observed among those aged 45–74. Within this population, the highest incidence rates are recorded among those aged 40–49 and 50–59. Since September 9, three new clusters have been identified in our region.
