World Cancer Day, February 4, 2017

To mark February 4, World Cancer Day and the third anniversary of the 2014–2019 Cancer Plan, Santé publique France is publishing fact sheets on four types of cancer: lung, breast, colorectal, and cervical. Cancer affects 355,000 people in France each year and is the leading cause of death. Santé publique France produces information to support public decision-making, such as cancer incidence, mortality, and survival rates, through a partnership with the FRANCIM cancer registry network, the biostatistics department of the Hospices Civils de Lyon, and the National Cancer Institute (INCa). The evaluation of organized screening programs also generates information related in particular to screening management structures. Monitoring of cancer risk factors (smoking, alcohol, nutrition, infectious risks—such as human papillomavirus (HPV) infection—and environmental and occupational risks) is also conducted. The age-standardized incidence rates per 100,000 person-years between 2008 and 2010 at the departmental level for the four cancers in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region are:

  • Breast: the rate ranges from 72.2 in Jura to 88.5 in Saône-et-Loire. All departments are below the national level.

  • Lung: the rate among women ranges from 12.8 in Saône-et-Loire to 17.4 in Yonne. Among men, it ranges from 45.1 in Saône-et-Loire to 55.7 in Yonne. Regardless of gender, the rate is below the national rate for Saône-et-Loire and Jura. The rate in Côte-d'Or is below the national level for women and above it for men. The other departments show a rate higher than the national rate regardless of gender (Haute-Saône and Territoire-de-Belfort have been merged).

  • Colorectal cancer: the rate among women ranges from 21.6 in Doubs to 29.4 in Nièvre. Among men, it ranges from 33.8 in Saône-et-Loire to 46.6 in Nièvre. Regardless of gender, the rate is below the national average for Saône-et-Loire. The rates in the Jura and Doubs departments are below the national average for women and above it for men. The opposite situation is observed in Côte-d'Or. The other departments have rates higher than the national average regardless of gender.

  • Cervical cancer: the rate ranges from 5.3 in the Territoire-de-Belfort to 7.7 in the Jura and Saône-et-Loire. All departments have a rate above the national level except for the Territoire-de-Belfort.
