Dengue in French Guiana. Update as of May 23, 2024.

Key Points

  • Following a sharp increase in dengue virus circulation in French Guiana during January, the rate stabilized at a very high level for four weeks before beginning to decline in early March, reaching, by early May, the same level observed in late November 2023. Over the past two weeks, the weekly number of clinically suggestive cases has been rising. Vigilance remains essential with the return of the rainy season since mid-April.

  • In S20, dengue virus circulation is on the rise across the entire territory, with variations by sector. Dengue activity is sharply increasing in the West Coast and Maroni sectors, rising in the Cayenne Island and Eastern Interior sectors, and declining in the Savanes and Oyapock sectors.

  • The DENV-2 serotype was the most commonly identified in S20 (80% DENV-2 and 20% DENV-3 among serotyped samples).

  • Since January 2023, 21,001 clinically suspected dengue cases, seen in general practice or at health centers (CDPS), and 11,082 confirmed cases have been recorded, including 14,084 and 8,296, respectively, in 2024.

  • The characteristics of 354 hospitalized patients for whom information is available are described on page 5. These data are currently being consolidated.
