Health Monitoring in the Limousin Region. Update as of July 31, 2015.

Update on Enterovirus Infections as of July 15, 2015Enteroviruses are found worldwide. They circulate year-round in tropical regions. In temperate zones such as France, an increase in diagnosed enterovirus infections is observed every year during the summer and fall, primarily linked to a surge in meningitis cases.Human enterovirus infections are common and present with a wide variety of symptoms. They primarily affect children under the age of 15. The virus is transmitted through person-to-person contact via viruses excreted in feces and in the nasopharynx. For the vast majority of infected individuals, the symptoms and course of the infection are mild. In France, surveillance of enterovirus infections has been conducted by a network of volunteer laboratories since 2000 (Enterovirus Surveillance Network, RSE, coordinated by the CNR and the InVS). In addition, the Oscour/InVS network monitors emergency department visits for a diagnosis of enterovirus meningitis. Currently, France is seeing a resurgence in enterovirus circulation, which has intensified since June, accompanied by an increase in meningitis cases. Preliminary data show a predominance of coxsackievirus B5 and echoviruses types 6 and 9. In Limousin, the same trend is observed as at the national level, with an increase in emergency department visits for viral meningitis beginning in week 21 of 2015.
