Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of February 4, 2016.

Mortality: Mortality rates (all ages and those aged 75 and older) recorded in S03 are above the alert thresholds. This marks the first week that rates have exceeded the thresholds since the beginning of the year. This trend will need to be confirmed next week with the consolidated data. Nationally, the observed mortality rate is in line with expected levels for this period.

Emergency room visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency room activity for children under 1 year of age and adults aged 75 and older remains below the alert threshold, close to the expected values for this period.

Reportable Diseases (MDO)No unusual situations have been observed since early January 2016.

Carbon monoxide poisoningSince September 1, 2015, 22 incidents have been reported in Aquitaine, including 10 related to boilers/water heaters, 3 to the use of barbecues/fire pits, and 4 to generators. In total, 44 people had to be transported to the emergency room.

Acute Gastroenteritis (AG) In Aquitaine, activity remains high, exceeding the epidemic threshold for SOS Médecins, while remaining moderate and within expected ranges for Oscour®. In nursing homes, 26 cluster cases reported over the past 6 weeks. In France, the 4th week above the threshold for general practice visits and increased activity in emergency departments.

Influenza: Influenza activity is rising in Aquitaine, with a pre-epidemic situation and the start of an epidemic in 12 regions (10 new regions). In Europe, activity is in the pre-epidemic phase in 29 out of 45 countries. In Aquitaine, there were no severe cases of influenza and no clusters of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in week 04-2016.

Bronchiolitis: The uptick in activity observed in Week 03 continues, according to SOS Médecins, with 6.8% of cases among children under 2 years old vs. 5.4% last week—a resurgence often seen during this period. In emergency departments, activity has decreased again (9.2% vs. 13.2% in Week 03). Cases handled by AquiRespi are also down (108 during the last shift). The proportion of respiratory samples testing positive for RSV has dropped significantly (4%). Nationally, the decline in activity observed since week 52 has slowed slightly since week 02.

Respiratory Virology and Enterovirus Meningitis: One report of enterovirus meningitis from the Bordeaux University Hospital laboratory and two from the Oscour® network. Among the 25 positive respiratory virus tests, 7 were rhinoviruses and 4 were influenza (3 influenza A and 1 influenza B).

Chickenpox: Activity remains stable, with figures staying below the alert threshold.
