Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of December 30, 2015.
Mortality: The mortality figures observed during week 51 are in line with expected levels for this period, both across all ages and by age group.
Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency department activity for children under 1 year of age remains high and above the threshold, likely due to the bronchiolitis epidemic. Increased emergency department activity for those aged 75 and older.
Reportable Diseases (MDO)No unusual situations have been observed since early December 2015.
Carbon monoxide poisoningSince September 1, 2015, 17 incidents have been reported in Aquitaine, including 6 related to boilers, 3 to the use of barbecues/fire pits, and 3 to generators. In total, 39 people had to be transported to the emergency room.
Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE)In Aquitaine, activity is on the rise according to SOS Médecins and the Oscour® network (threshold exceeded for the first week). In France, activity is also rising, with case numbers close to those observed the previous year.
Influenza: Influenza activity remains low in Aquitaine, as in all regions of mainland France and across Europe. However, an increase in activity is observed in southern France, particularly in the Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées regions.
Bronchiolitis – Significant epidemic activity: Activity continues to decline but remains significant according to the Oscour® network (falling from 23% of emergency department activity among children under 2 in Week 51 to 18% in Week 52 of 2015) and among SOS Médecins associations (falling from 12% to 9% of activity among children under 2 years of age). The AquiRespi network recorded 242 cases over the weekend of December 26–27 (545 between December 24 and 27).
Respiratory virology and enterovirus meningitis: One report of enterovirus meningitis from the virology laboratory at Bordeaux University Hospital and one case reported by the Oscour® network. Among the 19 positive respiratory virus tests, 8 were rhinoviruses and 8 were RSV.
Mushroom poisoning (indicator not detailed in the body of the document)Since June 29, 2015, 123 cases according to CAPTV and 47 cases according to Oscour® (1,407 and 569 in France) (data to be consolidated). Three severe cases reported in Aquitaine.
