Surveillance of Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika in Occitanie. Update as of August 11, 2023.
Key Points
In Occitanie, since May 1, 2023, 29 imported cases of dengue and 1 imported case of chikungunya have been identified. No cases of Zika have been identified.
To limit the risk of local transmission, 46 entomological surveys and 38 vector control treatments were carried out in the vicinity of these cases.
Nationally, from May 1 to August 11, 2023, the following cases were confirmed: 296 imported and 2 locally transmitted cases of dengue, 5 imported cases of chikungunya, and no cases of Zika.
There has been an increase in the circulation of the dengue virus (primarily DEN-2) in the French West Indies, resulting in the importation of numerous cases to mainland France (see dengue surveillance data from overseas territories).
The first instance of locally transmitted dengue in mainland France this season was identified in Gardanne in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in early August. To date, 2 locally transmitted cases have been confirmed.
Furthermore, West Nile virus circulation has been detected in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, specifically in the Bordeaux metropolitan area; seven human cases and one equine case have been identified. These are the first cases of the season in mainland France and the first human cases of West Nile virus infection in France outside the Mediterranean region.
