OSCOUR National Newsletter, February 6, 2024

Key Points

  • In Week 05 (January 29–February 4), emergency department visits and hospitalizations following such visits remained stable across all age groups.

  • Mirroring overall activity, the vast majority of indicators remained generally stable between Week 04 and Week 05.

  • Only seasonal respiratory indicators continue to rise, but much less markedly than in Week 04 and with low numbers, mainly among children:

    • While influenza cases across all ages have stabilized (+2%, or +213 visits in S05 vs. +47%, or +3,652 visits in S04), there has been a slight increase in visits for influenza/influenza-like illness and cough among children under 2 years of age (respectively +10% and +16%, or +139 and +54 visits), acute bronchitis among children under 15 (+13%, or +57 visits) and pneumonia among children aged 2–14 (+6%, or +77 visits).

    • Among adults, increases were limited to 6% for influenza/influenza-like illness among those aged 75 and older and for ENT infections (respectively +76 and +232 visits).

  • Among children and adults, procedures for acute bronchitis and pneumonia remain at levels higher than in previous years.

  • Among other indicators, notable increases include conjunctivitis among children under 15 (+31%), dehydration (+17%, small sample size but rising for several weeks), and isolated fever among 2- to 14-year-olds (+9%).
