Erectile dysfunction in diabetic patients in France: the 2007 ENTRED study

Introduction: The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of ED, its associated factors, and its management in a representative sample of patients with diabetes, and to describe the sexual lives of men and women with diabetes. Patients and Methods: ENTRED 2007 is a French national study of 8,926 adult patients with diabetes. ED was assessed using the IIEF-5 questionnaire. Results: ED was assessed in 744 diabetic patients (648 type 2 (T2D), 78 type 1 (T1D)). The prevalence of ED was 73% among T2D patients and 53% among T1D patients. One-third of patients with ED consulted a doctor for sexual dysfunction, and 16% received treatment for ED. Among T2D patients, factors significantly associated with the presence of ED in multivariate analysis were: age, hypertension, HbA1c > 7%, lack of changes in daily habits, presence of diabetes complications, care by a specialist, a pessimistic outlook on the future, and lower quality-of-life scores. Among T1D patients, only age was significantly associated with the presence of ED. Of the 1,701 men and women who answered the question on sexual satisfaction, 47% were very or somewhat satisfied. Conclusion: This study confirms the very high prevalence of ED among diabetic patients. Despite the significant negative impact on quality of life, patients with ED rarely consult their doctor, and only a very small proportion of them receive therapeutic management, even though quality-of-life scores are higher among patients treated for ED compared to untreated patients. A strong emphasis on screening for and treating ED should be encouraged among all healthcare providers involved in the care of people with diabetes. (R.A.)
