What data is available on sexual violence in France, and how should we interpret it?

The prevalence of sexual violence in France is significant: according to the Virage survey (2015), 14.5% of women and 3.9% of men have experienced sexual violence at some point in their lives; among them, 3.7% of women and 0.6% of men have experienced an attempted rape or rape. Multiple surveys show that this violence is highly concentrated in the earliest years of life: more than half of the sexual violence reported by women and two-thirds of that reported by men occurs or begins before the age of 18.
